A little thought, a eye-opener:
I remember the first time I walked into the cold seminar
room, all cocky and confident. I thought I knew quite a lot about
communications so at least I was a step ahead of the rest of the class. But
after the two first minutes, the cockiness slapped me in the face. The other
students in the class were so brilliant, the way they think and express
themselves in English was ten times better then me. I had a lot to learn from
them, from the class and from the environment…
The most amazing group of people, tutorial group # 7 |
With a huge workload in this class, from blog posting, peer-teaching,
interactions, readings and so on, and other classes that demand a lot from me
it made me freak out at the beginning. But with a
good group of people and a lot of interesting discussions in the class the time
flew by. It was the best module I ever had, and one where I learned so much.
English is my third language and this module improved my oral and written
communication skills. People around me have seen my improvement, I have become
more professional in the way I present myself. From the first day to the last I
could recognize my own improvements, even if the last presentation was weak. I
know I could have done better and for sure can do so in the future. On
top of everything even my time managing skills have improved and I’m more
structured now.
It is because of one thing I really want to give all
honor to this class, the cover letter and resume part. I applied for a job
where they demanded that you are in school for your master’s degree and that
you study business. This is because it’s inside business development in one of
the biggest companies in Scandinavia. I am currently in school for my
bachelor’s degree and I am studying sociology and political science. Before my
presentation they told me that I did not suit the job because I was not a
master degree student. The day after I got a new email saying that they had
opened a new position because of my cover letter and resume. I did not expect
that at all. My cover letter and resume! I can only acknowledge this class for
this, it really showed me how to present myself in a proper way, in any aspect
of the professional life. The class helped me develop myself to become a more
professional speaker and writer.
It made me realize that professional communication is so
much more then I thought and it is so useful to have it in ones background.
As a conclution to the progress through the year I can say that I reached my goal but still I have a long way to go until I can call my self a professional communicator!
Hey Sumea!
SvarSlettCongratulations for the successful application! Really happy for you that you managed to apply the knowledge you learned from this course, I hope I can do the same one day. I am similar to you in the sense that I am also most excited about applying my newly learned skills to my future job search.
Yeah this course had a huge workload, I'm glad we all made it by working together, you were really great to work with because you have such a strong sense of responsibility. I'm still amazed that you have such a strong grasp of your third language, I can barely handle two. Thanks for contributing in class and bringing a fresh, foreign perspective everytime, I am really happy to have taken this module and worked with you.
All the best for your academics and your career!
Han the man!!! Thank you for the kind words. I have had learned so much by working with you. You are just amazing!! I really enjoyed my groups in this class. The other modules we had so many disagreements and we had trouble solving it. In this class everyone was so openminded and from each one of you in the class and specially my group I have learned so much valuable stuff. And while doing the project work I have also become more attached to you, and I will miss you so much!
SvarSlettI think Han that if you use what you have learned in this class it will be a piece of cake for you to get a job. You are so intelligent and you have the grades for sure! Wish you all the best in life, and may our roads cross.
Hopefully you will come a day to Norway and visit!

SvarSlettHi Sumea,
SvarSlettThis was a really nice post. Reading these last posts are so sad. This was such a fun course and our class was really awesome. We had a good mix of students from 8 different countries and different languages and cultures. Apart from that, the group hangouts we have after class made us culturally more aware and were a lot of fun. The numerous nice points you brought up in class made you an asset to our class. And yes, this module has helped improve our professional communication in a large way. Though we might not be perfect, we have come a long way from our first days in this course. Congratulations on landing a job. You will be leaving after this semester but still try to keep in touch. All the best Sumea!
Hi Sumea,
SvarSlettI think this is the first time I commented on your post? And it is the last time too!:P
First of all, it is a pleasure taking this module with you and the other classmates. Thanks for all your positive feedbacks during debriefs and the sharing in class as a foreign student’s perspective. I had a great time discussing with you in class during pair work. However, it is a pity that I did not have an opportunity to work with you for any major assignments. Nevertheless, I am happy for you for your successful job application. I bet your cover letter and resume were really fantastic and flawless for the company to open another position just for you. You are certainly a great communicator and you have improved a lot throughout these twelve weeks too. I hope you had a great time in ES2007S like I do and may your experience in NUS a wonderful one! All the best for your future endeavours!
Cheers,
Yong Sheng
Hi Sumea,
SvarSlettI would agree with you and Han that the workload in this course is quite heavy but I felt it was a joy doing it because of the wonderful people I worked with and the practicality of the work we had to do. It is amazing you managed to secure an internship position with the resume and cover letter you wrote. How much more awesome can it get?
Professional communication is indeed a useful and important skill to have. I've never thought so much about it before this course but I am now fully convinced that though it is not easy to be an effective communicator, all of us have the potential to become one eventually!
I hope you enjoyed your time in NUS and your stay in Singapore. See you again soon!
Dear Sumea,
SvarSlettCongratulation for your successful application. I am also applying for an internship with the cover letter and resume I wrote in this course. Really really wish that I would succeed like you.
You are so confident and skillful as a professional communicator. I believe you will reach even further in the future. All the best to you.
Cheers,
Thao
Thank you!! I will miss you all. Wish you all the best everyone!!!
SvarSlettThank you very much, Sumea, for telling in this final reflection the story of how you felt when you first arrived in ES2007S class and the way your feelings evolved. I can appreciate the "slap" you describe because indeed this group was not just brimming with talent but also with serious effort. Your post exudes the sense of awe you felt, but it also shows how you seamlessly adapted. I'm especially grateful that you feel that your skills improved so drastically and that your recent grad school offer can partially be attributed to the way your revised resume and cover letter were received. (Congratulations for that!)
SvarSlettI look at the comments left on your post and note the impact you've had on classmates (and how they've impacted you). Much of that is directly related to your willingness to leave your comfort zone and "become one" with the other students. It also is a testament to your effort at interactions and sharing within the class. I truly appreciate such an effort, Sumea, which has made it my pleasure to work with you.
All the best as you continue your learning journey!
Hey Sumea,
SvarSlettcongratulations on the internship, hope its a wonderful experience and helps you do something you really like. I think you are a very effective communicator. Your presentations and peer - teachings went very well and I enjoyed both of them. All the best for your future endeavors. Your already a great communicator :)
